In the case of the Cicada, it is common for the bug, protected by it's shell, to be hibernating underground for years before emerging out of the ground and completing it's life-cycle as an adult. These shells are then discarded and forgotten, never to be missed. The cicada may only live a few weeks in it's adult form, but may have spent up to 17 years underground.
